School Block Challenge

Moda FabricsSponsored by Moda Fabrics, School Block Challenge is a yearly contest for children. Participating schools, youth groups and parents are given packets with three fabrics from Moda, and students were required to incorporate all three fabrics in their block.

Entries may be created by individual students and small groups. Quilters often assist the students as their projects develop. The blocks are judged in categories of K - 4th grades, 5th - 8th grades and 9th - 12th grades. A grand prize award is given to the overall outstanding quilt block.

An exhibition of all quilt blocks will be on exhibit at The National Quilt Museum. A narrative about each block’s design and development submitted by the students is also exhibited. A kick-off reception for the exhibit is held in late January to recognize the winners and all the participants. Local residents and media are always invited to meet these amazing quilters and learn more about School Block Challenge.

This year I am studying the history of the horse so I decided to make a horse quilt block. I drew the horse and then enlarged it on a copy machine. I thought, with all the color in the block, using black would make the horse standout. I like making crazy quilt blocks so that’s how I thought of the yarn with the strings on it. The first thing I did was pick the horse drawing I wanted to use. Next I picked out all the craziest fabric I could find. I than put all the crazy fabric together in blocks, then I added the horse in the middle. I added the yarn last.

I appliqués the horse. I also used wonder under on the horse. For the border, I used paper piecing. I drew out small blocks paper pieced them and then sewed them together. I decided to add the yarn on top of the block rather than sewing it in a seam.

I really enjoyed working on this block and I’m looking forward to next year’s challenge!

"Prince Moda"

9 - 12th Grade 1st Place Winner - "Prince Moda"

“Our design this year was inspired by the piece of material with cats and dogs. The class first thought of ‘raining cats and dogs’ but realized this would be a common theme. Again the students surfed the Internet for quilt designs of cats and dogs. They were mostly impressed with the cute animated designs, so one of the students drew a dog, which we decided to name Moda.

The students (Steven Ames, Tiffany Bonnell, Lexie Capotosti, Lindsey Deich, Samantha Morin, Evelyn Turner, Tyler Weatherford, & Tiffani White) were now anxious to see the finished product. For the border the students want to add dog bones, so Mrs. Cheryl Kelly of the Tuesday Needlers Quilt Guild suggested that we try the bowtie technique. With the pattern we were using it was impossible to reduce to ¼ inch size to fit onto the border. It was then decided to use the bow ties for the top corners hoping it would give the impression of dog bones.

The quilt block took approximately three weeks to complete. Three students who worked on last years’ design worked with five additional students from the Art III & IV class. Quilting is part of the Kentucky Humanities Core Content and is required to be taught. This competition is an excellent project to incorporate into the curriculum.”
